First, give your protagonist what would satisfy them. Then, give them more than they expected.

 

Example: Cyrano is happy to be able to write Christian’s letters to Roxane. Then, in the balcony scene, he can speak to Roxane for him (… in the night that protects me I dare to be myself at last…)
